Acoustics as a Design Feature

One of the most exciting shifts in commercial interior design over the past decade has been the transformation of acoustic treatment from a functional afterthought into a genuine design feature. The acoustic panel has gone from being a beige rectangle mounted in corners to something genuinely beautiful — a surface with texture, colour, and personality that contributes to the character of a space rather than just dampening its noise.

This boardroom project is a perfect example of that shift in action.

The Project

Our client had a boardroom with a significant acoustic problem: hard surfaces on every plane, a high ceiling, and a table that reflected sound directly into the faces of everyone sitting around it. The result was a room where conversation felt effortful and videoconferencing was a particular struggle.

Working with Autex Acoustics, we designed a bespoke acoustic treatment solution that addressed every reflective surface in the room. Rather than covering walls with generic panels, we created a layered system with geometric precision — panels in complementary tones that worked with the room's existing colour palette while dramatically reducing reverberation.

The Result

The acoustic measurement results were excellent — reverberation time dropped significantly across the speech frequency range, and the client's first videoconference in the treated room confirmed that the improvement was immediately perceptible. Voices were clearer. The room felt calmer. The space finally matched the quality of what was being discussed in it.
