The University of Canterbury — Colour That Teaches
Institutional spaces have traditionally defaulted to neutral, low-risk colour choices. Beige walls, grey carpet, black furniture. Safe. Inoffensive. Forgettable. The University of Canterbury has taken a different approach — one we strongly endorse — using deliberate colour choices to give different campus spaces distinct identities, foster a sense of belonging, and create environments that students actively want to spend time in.
The Role of Colour in Education
Research in educational environments has consistently shown that colour affects student engagement, mood, and cognitive performance. Spaces with considered, intentional colour schemes produce better outcomes than neutral environments — not just aesthetically, but measurably in terms of how students feel and how effectively they learn.
The Canterbury University fit-out demonstrates this principle in practice. Different zones across the campus use colour to signal function and create atmosphere — energising tones in collaborative spaces, calmer hues in areas designed for focused individual work, warm hospitality palettes in dining and social zones.
The Furniture's Role
Furniture is one of the most effective and flexible tools for introducing colour into an institutional environment. Unlike wall paint, furniture can be reconfigured and eventually replaced as preferences evolve. It introduces colour in ways that feel active and dynamic rather than passive and fixed.
The specification for this UC project drew on our Pedrali and Chair Solutions ranges for their depth of colour options, with upholstery choices coordinated across different seating categories to maintain palette coherence. See more of our education projects or get in touch.
