Study Spaces That Work With the Architecture

One of the challenges of specifying furniture for education environments is creating spaces that genuinely support study without blocking natural circulation, consuming too much floor area, or looking out of place in an environment designed to feel open and connected. This project, delivered in collaboration with our Markant and Hybrid ranges, solved all three.

The Design Approach

The client — a tertiary institution with large open-plan learning areas — needed to create individual and small-group study zones within a space that was fundamentally designed for movement and informal activity. The solution wasn't to build permanent rooms within the space, but to use furniture that created defined territories without physical enclosure.

Markant's modular workstation system provided the desking infrastructure — height-adjustable surfaces, integrated power, and a clean, architectural profile that held its own in a large open floor plate. The Hybrid seating range complemented it with a soft, welcoming aesthetic that encouraged students to stay and work rather than treat the space as a transitional zone.

Custom Ply Details

The project also included custom-designed plywood privacy screens — locally manufactured to our specification — that defined individual study bays without creating visual barriers that would have made the space feel closed or institutional. Natural timber materiality connected the furniture system to the building's wider material palette.

The result is a study environment that feels purposeful, attractive, and genuinely usable. See more education projects or contact us to discuss your campus furniture needs.
