Colour as a Design Tool

There's a persistent misconception in commercial interior design that offices should be neutral. Beige walls, grey carpet, black chairs. Safe. Inoffensive. Invisible. The thinking goes that a neutral palette lets the work take centre stage, that colour is a distraction in a professional environment.

We disagree. And this week's completed project is another piece of evidence for our side of the argument.

This Week's Project

We completed an office fit-out that made deliberate, confident use of colour — and the result is a space that people genuinely want to spend time in. The client understood what many don't: that a well-considered colour palette doesn't compete with productivity, it supports it.

The key is intentionality. Colour used randomly or carelessly can feel chaotic. Colour used with purpose — anchored to a brand palette, deployed in the right proportions, balanced with neutral elements — creates a space that has energy, identity, and character.

The Science Behind It

Research in environmental psychology has consistently shown that colour affects mood, cognitive function, and even physical wellbeing. Blues and greens promote calm and focus. Yellows and oranges energise and stimulate creativity. Reds increase urgency and alertness. Understanding these effects allows designers to use colour strategically rather than decoratively.

In this project, we used colour to define different zones within the floor plan — a warm palette in the breakout area to encourage relaxation and conversation, cooler tones in the focused work areas to support concentration.

If you're ready to bring some colour into your office, let's talk.
