The Challenge

Over a decade, the University of Canterbury required continuous upgrades across multiple buildings—each with different functions, users, and constraints.

From libraries and learning hubs to enrolment spaces and informal study zones, the challenge wasn’t just designing individual areas—it was creating consistency across a campus while responding to changing needs, technologies, and student behaviours over time.

Each intervention had to integrate with what already existed, often within aging or complex structures, while still pushing the experience forward.

The Solution

A long-term, adaptive design approach.

Rather than treating each project as standalone, a cohesive design language was developed—one that could flex across buildings while maintaining a recognisable identity.

Durable materials, modular furniture systems, and repeatable elements created consistency and efficiency. At the same time, each space was tuned to its purpose:

• Quiet, focused zones with acoustic control
• Open, social areas with flexible seating
• Integrated support spaces that feel approachable and human

Cultural narratives and subtle patterning were layered into key elements, giving spaces identity without overwhelming functionality.

Over time, this approach allowed the campus to evolve naturally—each project building on the last.

The Outcome

A campus that feels connected, not pieced together.

Students and staff move through different buildings without friction—the experience is intuitive, familiar, and adaptable. Spaces support a wide spectrum of use, from individual study to collaborative work and informal gathering.

Importantly, the longevity of the design approach means earlier projects still sit comfortably alongside newer ones, creating a cohesive environment despite being delivered over many years.
