Christchurch Boys High School

The Challenge

Christchurch Boys’ High School required a careful balance between past and future: delivering two new buildings and modern learning environments while restoring the historic main block. The project needed to unify old and new, support evolving teaching methods, and withstand the daily demands of a high-use school environment. Spaces had to be flexible, durable, and engaging for students, without losing connection to the school’s strong heritage identity.

The Solution

A cohesive design language was developed across the campus using a simple, robust material palette of plywood, steel, and durable finishes. This created visual continuity between new builds, refurbished classrooms, and restored heritage spaces.

A variety of learning settings were introduced—from informal lounges and breakout zones to high workbenches and collaborative classrooms—supporting different modes of learning and social interaction. Furniture and joinery were designed as a flexible “kit of parts,” allowing consistency while adapting to each space.

Large windows and perimeter seating were emphasized to strengthen connections to natural light and the surrounding landscape, enhancing wellbeing and usability throughout the school.

The Outcome

The result is a unified campus environment that feels contemporary yet grounded in its context. Students and staff benefit from a range of adaptable, student-centered spaces that encourage collaboration, independence, and connection.

The consistent material approach ensures durability and longevity, while the variety of spatial experiences creates an engaging and functional learning environment. The restored main block sits confidently alongside the new buildings, reinforcing a seamless relationship between heritage and modern education.
